*darkermusings has just put up a comparison pic, and is planning to do an article on postwork in 3D. Here's my submission.

It's a piece I made for a nightmare-themed competition, and both the construction and post work took quite a while. It's actually Michael 3 under all that, believe it or not!

Working from the base render, I applied various textures over the top, painted in scabs, tears, blood and stitches, and incorporated other renders to make a bit of a mish-mash of a creature. I wouldn't like to say with any accuracy how long it took altogether, but it was probably the best part of 2 days, full time.
